All food waste and to-go ware from University Dining is composted at the campus compost system - W&L processed over 160,000 lbs. of food waste in the 25-26 academic year, keeping it out of the landfill and sequestering an average of 17 tons carbon of carbon annually. This process is supported by our sustainability office and our amazing student Compost Crew, who help collect and record food waste from venues and assist in food waste reduction events, such as Weigh the Waste. All students are paid for their participation in collection and events.

The Washington and Lee University English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
program strives to facilitate communication among the rural and increasingly diverse
language communities of Rockbridge County. We aim to foster multilingualism and
greater social equity in our area through language learning and literacy initiatives. While
we reject the imposition of English, we believe that English-language competency is
important for accessing vital health, human, and education services, particularly given
our rural location. We support and collaborate with speakers of many languages, though
we specialize in English and Spanish. In service of this mission, ESOL offers the a wide
range of language services including: tutoring in the local school systems; English
classes; College Readiness Programming; Translations; Interpretations; Special Outreach
programs (Programa SOL, Amigos United); and Community Events.

The Library Student Advisory Board (LSAB), created in 2019, is dedicated to bringing a distinctly student perspective to the auditing and improvement of library services, spaces, collections, and programming. Our members represent all different class years and majors and range from library student workers to students who just love the library!

In addition to supporting technological and physical improvements in the library, such as stress testing new self-checkout software and generating new signage, LSAB also enjoys connecting with the student body. It is the mission of the W&L Pre-Health club to provide resources, support, and networking opportunities to the large pre-health student population on campus.
