The Boating and Water Derived Activities Club (BAWDA) exists to connect students with the rivers, lakes, streams, and waterways of the Shenandoah Valley and beyond. We foster a community built around a shared love of the water, whether that means boating, wakeboarding, fishing, tubing, or simply getting outside, while promoting and educating safety, environmental stewardship, and an appreciation for the natural landscapes that surround Lexington. Burish interns are responsible for determining the volunteer needs of one of ten assigned schools in the Rockbridge County School System. Interns work in recruiting and training tutors to fill the needs of schools and ensuring that tutors are responsible for their assigned shifts. The Washington and Lee University English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
program strives to facilitate communication among the rural and increasingly diverse
language communities of Rockbridge County. We aim to foster multilingualism and
greater social equity in our area through language learning and literacy initiatives. While
we reject the imposition of English, we believe that English-language competency is
important for accessing vital health, human, and education services, particularly given
our rural location. We support and collaborate with speakers of many languages, though
we specialize in English and Spanish. In service of this mission, ESOL offers the a wide
range of language services including: tutoring in the local school systems; English
classes; College Readiness Programming; Translations; Interpretations; Special Outreach
programs (Programa SOL, Amigos United); and Community Events.
